You have nothing to lose. Or, if you do have something to lose, I’d bet you have a lot less to lose than you think. Don’t let the haters deter you from your purpose. There are always going to be people who don’t think you can do it. Forget them – their opinion doesn’t matter.
Looking Back on Your Life
Imagine looking back on your life as an older person. When faced with an important decision, ask your older self if you will regret doing it. Think of your older self as a wise version of yourself who has risen above the confusion of daily life into the peace of enlightenment. You can definitely be at peace right here in this moment – I’m just referring to an older version of yourself acting as a great check-in to make sure you are on the path you want to be on as you progress forward in your life.
Don’t Ever Listen to the Haters
After speaking down in Fairfield, Connecticut several days ago, I encountered a little bit of negativity from one of the audience members. Thankfully, most of the audience members loved my message and connected with what I was saying. At first I was tempted to let this guy get the best of me, but then I realized he has no power over me. If he has an issue with the fact that I’m inspiring others and living my dream, then that’s his problem and not mine. As Don Miguel Ruiz would say, not only is it nothing personal, but that guy’s negativity is a reflection of his own failures in life and has nothing to do with me or you.
In the past my night would have been ruined, but on the drive home I felt at peace and realized something:
Don’t ever listen to the haters – it’s not about them. It’s not about you either. It’s about connecting with the people who need to hear your message.
The Potential for Good and Bad
It ended up being a great night – I bumped into an old friend who attended my professional speaking engagement and he thought I did a great job. We had a lengthy heart-to-heart conversation about how to kickstart your career, be productive, and live your dreams.
The night would have went south if I focused on the hater’s cruel words, but by focusing on the good and how I was connecting with wonderful people, it turned out to be a wonderful night. Remember – what you focus on expands. As I discussed with John Lee Dumas, it’s essential to focus on the good in any situation. There’s always going to be a certain degree of bad and negativity (hopefully less than more), but it’s within your power to let the bad stuff fall by the wayside because you are focusing on the good. You are still facing reality directly; you are simply replacing the negativity with something better. There are always going to be moments where you could do to great damage by saying cruel things to people in return to their mean words and actions, but the way you win is by not letting their antics get to you. By thinking, realizing, and knowing how much good there is to focus on in any situation, you will be so much better off. Accordingly, the haters will disappear into the wind once they realize they have no power over you.
I know this is not always easy to do, but I promise with practice it’s a learnable skill to focus on the good. I’m definitely not perfect, but one thing I’m good at is seeing the silver lining in any given situation – and so can you.
